Diary Entry 2

School

Tuesday 2nd October.

Day 2.

Location: Patrician Brother’s College, Fairfield.

Once everybody arrived on set at the PatricianBrothersCollege, we realised we had a problem... WE HAD NO EXTRAS! Most of them had cancelled on us! *Cue everyone to furiously call all friends, relatives, friends of friends and friends of relatives who were under the age of 18!*
We eventually convinced enough people to drive all the way down to Fairfield, and we breathed a sigh of relief and began setting up our first shots.

The weather was beautiful, clear and sunny. Great for shooting! However NOT so great for some of us actors who were layered up in uniforms! Can you guess which lucky character got to wear the black woollen skivvy, cardigan and long black pants? ME!! But it was all so worth it though, as this was my first day on set. I was happy to be able to see how everybody was working so well together! I was so proud of all the cast and crew.

After filming our exterior scenes, we moved into a classroom with one of our Producers, Catherine Neasbey, trying her hand at acting, playing the teacher Mrs Entwistle. For this scene we needed to bloody up Leigh Murray’s face. (Matt Shepard) After mixing together a sticky concoction of red goo, (we will never reveal the secret recipe!!!) Moises Arteaga and myself began making Leigh’s face look like a squished tomato. This was great for me because I was able to put gross stuff on my brother’s face! (Yes, Leigh is indeed my brother) AND! Another good thing was that from that day onwards, I did make up! I was glad I was able to use more of my skills, in addition to my acting role.
After a LOT of throwing scrunched paper at ceiling fans, yelling and screaming, throwing people up against walls, jumping on tables and crash tackling people to the floor, we had finished all the classroom scenes, woo hoo!

  – The School Another perspective ...

Today was our second day of shooting and our first day at the school in Fairfield. As in a high school teacher in my other life, I was quite impressed by the facilities at this school – they are amazing compared to the facilities at my small country town school! I was also excited today to have my two little cousins Jordan and Jai on set as extras.

We had 20- something extras on set today, most of them teens, some of them amateurs. We started outside in the school quad, where the heat didn’t seem to affect most people. Some got a bit sunburnt though – eepp! One of ‘my extras’ Aaron seemed to have a good time chatting up a couple of the girls on set – his mum and I had a good laugh at that. We had to be thankful that it was a sunny day – and that everyone was well behaved – if we had problems in either of these departments the day would have been a shemozzle, especially considering how much movie making knowledge and experience most of us had at the time

After a couple of hours of outdoor shooting and some lunch, the action turned to one of the classrooms on site. Due to the space in the classroom, some of the crew (like me) ended up outside. It was fun to sit back and take things in from an “observers” perspective and watch things through the classroom window. My little cousins had a million questions about what was happening. They also fell in love with Chester, one of my fellow crew, while we were “spying on the inside”. Thanks to Chester for helping me keep them entertained for most of the day!

As the day started to come to a close, my little cousins were getting tired and bored, so we got the OK to leave the set a little early and I took them for some promised KFC for their amazing behaviour and I got a million more questions on the way home. I was on a high after this day’s shooting, I learnt a lot today just observing what needed to be done on set – it was a huge learning curve!
