Diary Entry 8

Psych ward

DAY 8 – Psych Ward, here we come!

Well, we did go to a hospital, but not to pay the psych ward a visit, although we should (especially Art). Today was probably the best day of filming. I think we finally have it together!

We all took a trip to HunterValleyPrivateHospital, which is all the way to Newcastle. We arrived about lunch and were greeted by Sue McEwen and the wonderful staff of the Hospital, who though it was amazing having a film crew around. They helped us throughout the day with extras, medical advise and information, on how to attach drips and needles – Grose! The Oscar goes to Gill, for her unprepared role as the emergency officer at the hospital dealing with a barely conscious Mr Shepard. 17 year old Trista, our special effects make up artist did an amazing job. Both Mr Shepard (Roger Smith) and Matt Shepard (Leigh Murray) scared everyone, who found it hard to believe it was just make up!

The staff of Hunter Valley Private we incredible, and more than we could ask for! It was an absolute pleasure, working with them, and getting the scenes done! Thanks!

Catherine Neasbey – Producer.

Tragedy, Loss, and Hamburgers.

Today would more then likely be Matt’s toughest scene, or mine so it’s probably why I didn’t get much sleep and why I just romed around my place in the wee early hours of the morning before my ride to Newcastle pulled up.

We stared getting ready around midday, Jessica (Monique), Roger (Peter Shepard), and myself had to get post car crash makeup, which was pretty cool. Trista the makeup FX girl did a fantastic job on all three of us, Jessica had a awesome cut over her eye with stitches, Roger was sporting a mean looking head wound. I had a two massive cuts on my head and was covered in an indescribable amount of fake blood on my head, shirt and hands that as it started drying, my hands were actually getting stuck to Rogers arm while he was on the gurney in one of our scenes.

Makeup was so convincing most of the nurses were getting startled when they would see me, so one thing that I was REALLY cautious about, was the fact that we were in a hospital and I didn’t want to scare any of the patients. Growing up I spent a lot of time in hospitals as my mother is a nurse and always told me not to make an ass of myself as the people being treated or concerned for loved one’s being treated.

Oh I have to apologize to Cat (Producer) as she was an extra as a nurse and there was a scene in the corridor with a gurney and I kept stepping/kicking her in the back of her heels… Sorry Cat, luv ya J

My other scene in which Peter Shepard dies was rather bizarre, I got into character and did all the techniques things we were taught (by Samantha Noble) I then imagined what if I had lost my father in an accident, I remembered my friends that I had lost, and remembered a good mate of mine who had died the day previous. I was all ready to go, then when I stepped into the scene it all happened and then we were done, I honestly have very little memory of what I did I mean I know I cried and screamed and all that but I don’t remember being in that scene… It just happened… the only word I am willing to put to that experience is “Perplexing”.

One thing I really did appreciate right after the scene was done, both Roger and Moises (writer & sound recordist) said that my performance was good and that they really liked it, so thank you guys.

And thanks to the staff at the hospital too, they were so accommodating and helpful and just very lovely. And thank you to the staff at that little burger/fish&chip shop up the street, for been so nice and lovely to me and Cat when we ordered like a million hamburgers at like 7pm. You guys made a hungry Cast and Crew purr like kittens.
